Princesa is the very beginning of our sanctuary’s story. In April 2020, we rescued our very first animal in Brazil—and it was Princesa. She was a pregnant donkey, found lying on the side of the road after being hit by a car. She was heavily pregnant, late in her term, and her leg was badly injured. Someone had tied a makeshift splint around it, but it offered no real help. We desperately searched for assistance—calling veterinarians, equine facilities, and sanctuaries—hoping to find her a safe place. We were able to get Princesa the urgent medical care she needed, but no permanent home was available for her. That was when we realized: we were her home. Shortly after her rescue, Princesa gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby girl who we named Espoleta. Together, they became the first two lives of what would grow into our full sanctuary.
